June Development Update

First off, let me apologize. When I initially started the blog off to the side I had a lot more time to push buttons over here. Now that I’m spending most of the week doing development / art for Cthulhu Junior I haven’t really had the chance to spend extra time over here, and the time that I have seems better spent making a fun game!

Game Updates:

Well, in the last couple of months I probably rewrote or added completely new game scripts for everything that existed before and a bunch of really fun stuff now. One of the things I had been most concerned about / most excited about figuring out was how we were going to be able to do the boss designs and I think between the 3 bosses that are in the current build (and one that will HOPEFULLY be ready by the end of the week) that we have some fun scenarios to play in. I’m not going to say that everything is fully polished by any stretch of the imagination, but it’s playable and the limited testing has proven to be positive.

Speaking of which, this Saturday I’ll be setting up my first public test of the game! There’s a local venue doing a garage/gearage/art sale and I snagged a booth so that I can set up a couple of laptops and have people that I don’t know play a bit. I’ll try to capture some video and share the feedback that we get on the blog once we take a day to recover from the 800 things I feel like we need to have done this week.

The first world (the water one that’s been in all of the previous videos) has all of it’s initial cutscenes and animations done but is still sporting some royalty free background music. The second (ahem, NEW) world is set in Egypt and currently has 2 regular levels, a mid-boss, and I’m in the process of getting the zones final boss ready for the weekend. I can’t imagine that I’ll have time to get Egypt’s cutscenes or more than the initial background song in the game but maybe I’ll get lucky. Regardless, once a good amount of game is done I’m going to take a bit of a development break and work on cranking out a few tunes that are likely going to be very themed around the ideas present in the current build.

The best thing about doing all of the art physically with paper and cardstock is that when I cannot bare to look at a computer any longer I can always move into the dining room and work on building out new asset ideas. This has also been wildly helpful as the amount of storms we have had recently routinely knocks out all the power in my neighborhood. I’ve already got the first enemy for the next biome (surprise: England) and I REALLY am excited to show off some of the (admittedly absurd) ideas I have for it.

Did I mention I think we have 800 things to do before Saturday? I’ll mark this off and update everyone once the other 799 are done.

Later!
